    Green Acts

Easy, everyday things you can do to live a greener life:

    Outside

  • Use trees and plants to shade your home; you can reduce cooling costs up to 25%
  • Seal any gaps or cracks in the windows and doors of your home -- and save 10% on your energy bills

    Inside
  • Replace your air conditioning filter at least once a month; more often if you have pets
  • Set your air conditioning thermostat a few degrees higher ... and your water heater thermostat a few degrees lower
  • Repair leaks in your water faucets; just one drop of water per second can waste 2,700 gallons of water per year!
  • Reduce your shower time from 10 minutes to five minutes ... and save more than 4,200 gallons of water per year
  • Use a low-flow shower head; it can cut your water consumption in half
  • Replace old appliances with energy-efficient ones. Look for the Energy Star symbol: EnergyStar.gov
  • Turn off the TV, stereo and lights when you leave a room
  • Switch to CFL's (compact fluorescent lightbulbs); they use 75% less engergy than incandescent bulbs

    At Work
  • Consider going paperless; convert hard copy files to digital media
  • Think Before You Print; The average U.S. office worker goes through 10,000 sheets of copy paper a year
  • Recycle; copy paper, faxes, envelopes, catalogs, toner cartridges, junk mail, even furniture
  • Use recycled products; buy brands of copy paper, paper towels, toilet paper, toner and other office supplies that are made from recycled materials

    Other Acts
  • Remove your name from junk mail lists: DMAConsumers.org
  • Carpool to work: 1800234RIDE.com
  • Or try public transportation :Miami-Dade County Transit; Broward County Transit; Tri-Rail
  • Green Facts

  • Why recycle? Recycling an aluminum can uses only 5% of the engergy required to make a new one
  • Check your tire pressure: For every three pounds that your tires are below their recommended pressure, your fuel economy drops 1%. Increase fuel economy and extend the life of your tires by keeping them inflated to the proper pressure
  • The U.S. is the source of 25% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions
  • 100 million trees are sacrificed annually just for junk mail. Americans receive 400 million tons of junk mail each year.
